The Seva Outreach Sangh (SOS) continues its mission. The group has recently organized yet another successful community event. A health fair was held at Shri Surya Narayan Mandir in Jamaica, New York on April 11th. As our community is in the midst of a health crisis/epidemic, the group found it vital to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate who are unable to access necessary medical attention. The day began with a symposium on health, with a special focus on the impact of Diabetes amongst the Indo-Caribbean population. Emphasis was placed on education and more importantly preventative measures one should take if at increased risk of Diabetes/Hypertension/Heart Disease. Both young and old were present at the fair. Physicians present included Dr. Parmeshwar Mohabir, and Dr. Anand Hardowar who sat with each patient on an individual basis counseling them on their medical condition and answering all their questions. Also present was a physical therapist, Shakti Parbhunath who discussed pain management in arthritis and other chronic pain conditions. The group was accompanied by registered nurses Sharmila Bisram and Bobby Niranjan who were skillfully assisted by Mahindra Bisram, and other devotees of the mandir.
For the year 2010, SOS plan to award at least two scholarships to deserving candidates who are attending or plans to attend University of Guyana. The scholarship will cover the tuition fees for the entire academic year 2010 to 2011. In addition one student will also be given a one year scholarship to attend the Saraswattie Niketan High School at Cornelia Ida West Coast Demerara.
Our Medical team is currently planning to provide free Medical Services in Guyana on Thanksgiving weekend in November 2010. We feel there can be no better way of saying thanks to GOD than to offer our services and care for HIS children on earth.
