ImageOn September, 1st 2010 devotees at Shri Surya Narayan Mandir celebrated Krishna Janamashtami in grand style.  For this most auspicious day preparations started more than a week in advance.  Many devotees came to Mandir on Saturday 8/28, and the days preceding the grand day, to help clean the Mandir from top to bottom.   As explained by Pt. Ram Hardowar, similarly to cleaning our homes and Mandir to welcome the lord, we must clean and purify our minds as well.  It is only with a pure mind that Bhagwan Krishna can take up residence in our hearts.

In addition to cleaning the entire Mandir, devotees decorated the Murtis and the cradle of Baby Krishna.  The cradle was moved to the center of the Mandir so that all devotees will have a chance to make offerings and to welcome the lord at midnight.  Words cannot explain how beautiful the decorations were for this night. Most if not all of the devotees were enthralled by the decorations and the mood at Mandir. A visiting Pandit remarked that he thought he was in heaven when he saw the beautiful decorations.  This Janamashtami was very special indeed.  In addition to celebrating Lord Krishna birthday we also celebrated Suraj Hardowar birthday. We were also given a special treat on this night.   Just as baby Krishna mesmerize and bewitched all that saw him, so did the beautiful Shylaputri who was dressed like baby Krishna for this occasion.

The Katha given by Pt. Ram on Janamashtami was outstanding.  Panditji went into detail as to why this day is special and who we will be welcoming at midnight.   Pt Ram explained that this Janamashtami is very special because of the astrological factors prevailing at the Lord’s birth.
•    The Lord took Avatar (birth) on a Wednesday and this year it was celebrated on a Wednesday.
•    Rohini Nakshatra (the celestial birth star of Shri Krishna) continued beyond midnight on Wednesday.
•    Ashtami Tithi (the eighth lunar day – birth date of Lord Krishna) also continued past mid-night on Wednesday.

It is a rear coincidence that the above three factors exist at the birth time of Lord Krishna. This is why it is said to be extra special.
On Janamashtami we welcome the moon of Vrindavan; the one who has the ability to attract all in the world; the one who removes the sadness in our hearts and resolve any dilemma that we may face; the one who is everything and in everything.   An in-depth explanation was given as to why the lord comes and the story of Kamsa was retold in great detail.  As stated in Bhagawat Gita .

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya
tadatmanam srjamyaham

Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion (adharma)—at that time I descend myself.

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge

ImageTo deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion (Dharma), I myself appear millennium after millennium.
It was further explained that when the lord comes we must be ready to accept and receive him.  As long as you call on the lord he will come. He will remove any obstacles we may face and resolve all of our problems. He will remove the enemies around and within us.   The lord takes care of everything all we must do is have faith and trust in him.

At midnight when the lord came, the devotees were in a joyous mood.   Beautiful bhajans were sung and many mantras were chanted.    One could feel the presence of the lord as a feeling of calm and peace overcame all.    Many devotees stayed passed the auspicious hour of 12 midnight at Mandir even though the next day was a working day for most.   They knew the lord took residence at Shri Surya Narayan Mandir and in the mind and heart of all that attended this wonderful service.   A heartfelt thank you must be given to all the devotees who made this night such a wonderful one.
